Choose the right platform for your needs
The platform decision shapes everything else. There are broadly three approaches:
WooCommerce (WordPress) — the most common choice for small Kenyan retailers. Easy to set up, large plugin ecosystem, widely understood by local developers. The downsides: performance issues at scale, plugin conflicts, and M-Pesa integration quality varies significantly depending on the plugin.
Shopify — excellent for pure product retail, especially if you're also selling internationally. Monthly subscription cost can add up. M-Pesa integration is possible but requires third-party workarounds.

More than 80% of Kenyan adults use mobile money. If your checkout doesn't offer M-Pesa as a primary option, you're losing the majority of potential customers at the final step. The specific integration to implement is M-Pesa STK Push (Lipa na M-Pesa Online) — this sends a payment prompt directly to the customer's phone, which they approve with their PIN. It's frictionless, fast, and familiar to every Kenyan mobile user.
You'll also want to support Visa/Mastercard for customers buying with a bank card, and optionally Airtel Money. But M-Pesa first, always.
The conversion fundamentals most Kenyan stores ignore
- Fast mobile load times — your customers are on phones, on 4G. A 5-second load time loses you 50% of visitors before they see a single product.
- Clear product photography — this sounds obvious but it's the most common failure. Products need at least 3–4 images, clean backgrounds, and true colours. Low-quality photography kills conversions.
- Visible trust signals — especially for new stores, customers need reassurance before paying. Clear returns policy, physical address, phone number, and customer reviews reduce checkout anxiety significantly.
- Minimal checkout steps — every extra screen between "add to cart" and "payment confirmed" leaks customers. Guest checkout, prefilled fields, and a single-page checkout reduce abandonment dramatically.
- Order confirmation flow — what happens after the customer pays? They need an immediate confirmation page and an SMS/email receipt. An M-Pesa payment without a clear acknowledgement creates panic and chargebacks.
SEO for your product pages
eCommerce SEO is different from content SEO. Each product page needs a unique title, meta description, and enough text content for Google to understand what it's selling. Product descriptions like "High quality chair, available in multiple colours" rank for nothing. "Ergonomic office chair with lumbar support, Nairobi delivery" ranks for something specific that someone is actually searching for.
